Wednesday Afternoon Group

After each guild meeting those who wish to participate in our Wednesday Afternoon Group may bring a brown bag lunch and stay for an afternoon of sewing. You may choose to work on the project selected for the month or one of your own. Details of each project will be listed on this page and a supply list will be provided.

This little sewing bee is a great way to meet  and make new friends, get in a little extra sewing time and share expertise with others. We hope you will join us.

Joyce Armstrong, our Guilds’ Founder, designed a quilt which has been named “Joyce’s Favourite Scrappy Quilt”.  Through the years, many of our members have admired that quilt.  So, to honour Joyce, we are providing the pattern and directions.  Enjoy!

Wednesday Afternoon Group Project – 3-Yard Quilts

Sandi Hean will be keeping a watchful eye on us as we delve into the 3 yard quilt phenomenon.  Debra has shared a few free patterns:

Awareness-Ribbons-3-yard-Quilt-Pattern

And as well, Sandi has shared a site where there are more free patterns.  The site is https://sewcanshe.com/tag/3-yard-quilts/

To save some time, it is suggested that the participants have the material cut and ready to go for the 3 yard quilt they have chosen.  Maybe we will have some tops finished at the end of the approximately three hour session?

No need to sign up.  Just bring your pattern, material ready to go, your sewing machine and any other supplies you need.

Please come join the group and make a quilt for a gift, for a charity or just one for yourself.   Or, as always, you are welcome to bring a project of your own to work on in a “quilty” atmosphere.

The Haphazard Quilt – February Wednesday Afternoon Project – Nancy Weller-McCracken

A laissez-faire scrap busting quilt.   ( Mypoppet.com.au )

Nancy found this quilt while searching for a crosses quilt. It seemed perfect as she was sorting through scraps. It’s fast and easy yet interesting in construction.

Choose Your Design

For crosses a selection of strips 2-3 inches wide and no less than 7 inches long not longer than 14″ fat quarters yield a perfect size.

For background a selection of 7 x 7 inches squares.

Basic machine sewing supplies including rotary cutter and mat, sewing machine and, if you have it, a nine inch square ruler.

That’s it!

November 2023

The project for November had been to start making blocks for Quilts of Valour.  This project has been postponed until next year.

What is the plan now?  Well, let’s have a sewing afternoon to work on whatever project you have on the go.  Finish the Scrappy Strip Quilt, make placemats for Meals on Wheels, get some Christmas sewing done, work on a Helping Hands Quilt, bring your knitting/hand work and visit, put a few tables together to layer and baste a quilt, etc.  The room is available until 4:00 pm.

So bring your lunch, sewing machine and project(s) and enjoy the afternoon.

October 2023

Judith Creally will be showing us how to make a “Scrappy Strip Quilt” at the October 4th WAG presentation.

All you need are an assortment of strips, 1 1/2″, 2″, 2 1/2″, and 3 1/2″ wide.  The more scraps the better.  Don’t have a lot of variety, perhaps you could bring your extras and trade with another person.  I will also bring some along to share.

Homework:  ‘Start sewing like width strips together end to end.  Sew the 1 1/2″ strips lengthwise to the 2″ strips to make a 3″ wide strip. You’ll be ready when you have long strips of each width and making Judith very pleased with you.’  (A quote from the September meeting minutes.)

September 2023

4-Fabric Modern Placemats – Tina Lubimiv

Easy pattern to make placemats as gifts for family and friends for any occasion or just to make for yourself to brighten up your home.  This pattern works great for all seasonal fabric.  Also great for our Meals on Wheels contribution. Four (4) coasters with leftover material which measure 6″ square can also be made.

Fabric Requirements:

  • 0.4 m each of four coordinating fabrics – this will be enough for both the front and the backing (or 4 coordinating fat quarters for the front and 4 fat quarters for the backing)
  • 0.6 m for binding
  • 0.8 m batting (44″ wide)  – The pattern calls for polyester but you could use really any type.

Please bring your normal sewing supplies; sewing machine, scissor, rotary cutter, etc.
